Amazing Lapland

Everybody dreams about it. I'm lucky to have had the chance to experience it.

It started as a joke with two friends on a balcony in London :
"What should we do for New year?"
"Let's go somewhere warm but in Europe, not too far, so we don't waste time on flights"
"Ok, the most southern part is probably Greece"
"I've just checked... 15 degree in winter"
"Mmmmm ... there's no point going there for 15 degres, we might as well go somewhere cold, where the whole point of the place is the cold... like Lapland"
"Lapland?? I'm in"
"Yeah I'm in too"

Nine months later, on the 23 December 2015, we landed in Rovaniemi in Finland, the official village of Santa Claus, and started a collection of daily "Waaaaoooooow!!!" during 17 days.

People think that it must be hard to organise a trip in Lapland. I thought too. But it was thanks to my friend who organised it all. I have listed below the activities that we did if you want some inspirational ideas. One activity per day during 2 weeks.

Meeting Santa Claus

Yes Santa Claus exists ! I met him in person. In Rovaniemi, his official home town. You get to cross the virtual line of the polar circle too. You can even get an official stamp of your passport!

Snowboarding

First time snowboarding. Very scary. But fun. There is a ski station at Sarieeseska. We booked a snowboarding teacher for few hours. And returned the next day on our own.

Husky sledding

My D-R-E-A-M!! I have always dreamt of sledding with Husky. It's like in the National Geography documentary, but it's even better. The feeling of sliding on an unhabited frozen lake and through the snowy forest is just amazing.
Total freedom.

48h with the huskys, return journey of 100km, driving my own 5 dogs' sled with Guesthouse Husky (located in Ivalo, I recommend!)

One big case ticked !

Chasing the northern lights

What a magnificent spectacle. Best way to chase them is to rent a car and go out as often as you can. Check the aurora activity online to have a good idea of your chance to see them. We were lucky enough to have witnessed two really strong nights of aurora.

Snowmobile

A bit wobbly on the snow at first, but then awesome time on the snowmobile. Best to drive solo than in duo. At least I'm glad I did!

Ice fishing

Sounds super exotic and you first think of the eskimos. But it was nothing like that. Pretty boring. And obviously there is no fish to catch !

Hiking with snowshoes

A bit physical especially when it's -25°C, windy and snowy but a great day to spend through the great scenery and the purple pink sky.

Ice Karting

Go Karting, but on ice ! We drove when it was dark but it was well lit. So good that we wanted to do it again... but the second time was -30°C and they said "Sorry it's too cold today, you won't feel your fingers even with 3 pairs of gloves".

Reindeer trek

The idea of playing Santa Claus sounds good and the first 10 minutes are quite funny. But 45minutes seem too long as the trek is really really slow... you can get bored quite quickly.

Cross-country skiing

It's a bit different than the usual skiing, there are some rules to follow, but otherwise it's not too difficult.

Longest toboganning in Northern Europe

Yoooooohooooo this was fun but don't forget your goggles! 1200 metres long !
